General Motors CEO Dan Akerson believes Tesla could become a disruptive force in the automotive industry and is moving to ensure the American automaker doesn’t get caught off guard.

Chevrolet’s Volt has hardly had the same impact as the Tesla Model S on the automotive market. Akerson has assembled a small team to study Elon Musk and Tesla’s operations to see how it could threaten GM in the future.

The move is part of Akerson’s plan to push the envelope on General Motors and the technology it uses in its automobiles. GM is currently working on its next-generation Volt which could come in 2015 or 2016. Recently, the CEO mentioned that GM’s engineers are working hard to cut as much as $10,000 off the Volt’s price for its next-generation model.

Despite having a price tag of $69,900, the Tesla Model S outsold the Volt in the first quarter of 2013.
